You as the consumer do need to know all about the Carfax and the AMVIC Inspection. You most likely are familiar with CARFAX and how it informs you as a consumer; on the other hand, you very likely are not familiar with AMVIC and how it helps protect you as a consumer. AMVIC is the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council, the governing body for motor vehicle dealerships in Alberta that regulates sales, protects consumers and settles any disputes between customers and dealerships. Important Details In A CARFAX
Look for accidents claims and quotes
Look for previous ownership lease/rental
Look for maintenance records; the more details you know about the maintenance is a large help for future maintenance. If there are large gaps in time and mileage, try to find out where and how was it maintained
Liens, leases and writs
Recalls; if they are reported on the CARFAX reach out to the manufacturer to see how soon it can be done
Understanding the AMVIC Inspection
Inspection must be no older than 120 days
Must be signed off by a licensed technician with certificate number attached
Will note compliant and non compliant items of the inspection
If non compliant research what needs to be done or completed for it to pass. Most quality dealerships will note the issue and offer a quote if needed
Potential future costs, tires, brakes or other concerning non compliant work to be completed in the near future
Double check the odometer reading from the inspection to what the vehicle has on it the day you are shopping; sometimes vehicles are lent out to customers for extended test drives
You and the dealer will need to sign the inspection
You the customer must get a signed copy of the inspection and a copy of the CARFAX. If you have a seller that is unwilling to spend the time to go through this process with you, be ready to move to a more reputable dealership. Alberta Auto Approvals is proudly transparent about every vehicle we sell; we want you to know exactly what you're buying!
